Overview

Men’s health is a topic in healthcare that has been marginalized for decades. On one hand, this issue is due to men not playing an active role in their healthcare therefore, they seek care when it is late; on the other hand, it is due to providers not feeling comfortable to start the conversation with their patients. Over the past few years, some providers, and researchers have taken the responsibility to create awareness on issues that contributed to higher men’s mortality rates. Men generally seek care at the last minute, which of course leads to or predispose to complications. Women are 100% more likely to seek a doctor’s advice, request an annual exam and preventative services than men. As a result, women live healthier and longer lives than their male counterparts. Amongst older adults that live to100 years, women outnumber men 8 to 1. This conference will benefit men of all ages, providing them with information needed to live longer, happier, and healthier lives. This conference intends to review, discuss and fulfill the need to better understand African American male gender specific issues affecting them such as cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disorders, benign and malignant prostate disease, hypogonadism, male infertility and sexual dysfunctions.

Purpose

The purpose of this 1st Holistic Men’s Health Conference is to (1) raise the awareness of preventable health concerns in African American men, (2) encourage early detection (3) explore possibilities of treatment (4) empower care providers to initiate the conversation (5) as well as to educate on men’s specific health risks based on age range. In addition, this conference will shed light on the impact of spirituality on health. Thus, the body, the mind and spirit are all inter-connected.
